Remote access scams and how to stop them
Updated 1 October 2026
Remote access software lets someone see and control your computer or phone from somewhere else. It is useful for IT support, but scammers use it too.
How the scam usually works
- Someone calls, texts or shows a pop-up claiming to be from your bank, broadband company, Microsoft or the police.
- They say there is a problem, such as a virus or a refund.
- They ask you to install an app like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, RustDesk or open Quick Assist, and read them a code.
- Once connected, they can see your screen, open your banking and move money.
Real banks and companies will never ask you to install remote access software.
If you think it is happening now
- Hang up, or turn off your internet (Wi-Fi off, or unplug the router).
- Call your bank using the number on the back of your card, from a different phone if you can.
- Uninstall the remote access app (see your results for the steps).
- Change passwords for email and banking from a different, trusted device.
- Report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
